There are some ‘summer’ things that I wait all year to enjoy, like corn on the cob, tubing on the lake and ice cream–rich, farm fresh, old-fashioned ice cream. So when my roommates asked me to join them for frozen yogurt last weekend, I was skeptical. Frozen yogurt is not, and will never be, ice cream. It is healthier for you, but that obviously means it doesn’t taste good. But, I begrudgingly accompanied my friends to 16 Handles on 76th and Amsterdam. And that was the moment that my life changed forever.
16 Handles is the wild, rebellious cousin of the frozen yogurt family. Priding itself on having a diverse blend of frozen yogurt flavors and over 40 toppings, the fro-yo shop is anything but ordinary. So, I filled my dish with three flavors of frozen yogurt by pulling down the handles of Graham Cracker, Pistachio and Snickerdoodle. I then proceeded to survey the 40 topping bar, selecting Cap’n Crunch, Rainbow Chocolate Sunflower Seeds, and Dark Raspberry Truffle Cups. Mmm, mmm good!
With eleven locations throughout the East Coast, 16 Handles is rapidly expanding. Which is not surprising considering the shop offers more than just unusual flavors of fro-yo. They also support Trees for the Future, an environmental charity, by planting 16 trees every day.
Oddly addicting, totally delicious AND environmentally conscious? I’ll take one to go, please!
