Today I am going to talk about the wonderful world of Youtube and independent music. I’ve recently become obsessed with a Canadian band called Walk Off The Earth. Without any help of a record label or booking agent, this band has managed to climb to the top. They have 410,737 Facebook fans and 26,177 people talking about them via social media. They are currently touring the country, including making stops at the Mercury Lounge in NYC. The band sings mostly covers, which normally I am not a fan of, but I love that they put their own spin on popular music.

The band got noticed through YouTube with their unique music videos and talented vocals. Their video “Someone I used to know” has 30 million views and shows all five members of the band playing one guitar at a time. Their rendition of “Someone like you” showcases female vocalist, Sarah Blackwood, playing multiple instruments at a time. The setting of the video is a plain living room. I am all about outrageous video productions, but it’s also refreshing to watch a video that holds a simple yet creative tone. YouTube is the biggest video sharing website and I am amazed at the social impact it has on us today. More specifically, I love that it has been an outlet for talented musicians and artists. Every great musician craves to be noticed. But with the competition set high and record deals out of reach, YouTube has helped them share their work with the world.

Click on this link below that shows Walk Off The Earth playing on the Ellen Degeneres Show. Enjoy!
