Rockin out to Yoga

When you think yoga, you probably think of serenity, relaxation and quiet, right? Most of us who practice yoga  think of it as a time to step away from the rest of the busy, loud world and find peace. So, when I first heard of rock vinyasa, I was puzzled. Rock vinyasa is essentially doing yoga to upbeat, fun, modern music. I’ve stretched limbs and done sun salutations to everything from Mike Snow to Pat Benatar.

At Rock Yoga, instructors encourage participants to have fun and not to take it so seriously. Sometimes, they even encourage them to sing along.  Now yoga can be a upbeat form of exercise that makes you feel like you’re mixing yoga and dancing together- it’s one of the best yoga experiences i’ve had.

The resources of yoga in New York are endless, but trust me rock vinyasa is out there too. Yoga Soundscape in Tribecca sets live music jams to each Friday night yoga class. New musicians and guest DJs play anything from electronic dubstep to Indian drums to hip hop. At Earth Yoga studios their Ki Power Vinyasa yoga class is a hot class that flows to rock and roll music. Just keep in mind this is a heated yoga class so drink lots of water before coming!

Next time you are planning to grab a yoga mat, think about checking out your local rock vinyasa class. It’s an unforgettable experience.
