When I casually mentioned to Esther last week that I adored Olympic figure skating, she looked puzzled for a moment, and then laughed. “Oh yes,” she said. “The costumes are very sparkly.”
Everyone knows I’m a magpie. If I can find a way to work glitter into a project (like the sparkly hearts dangling from the ceiling at our recent Bloggers Bash) I will. It takes every ounce of restraint I have to not show up to work covered in sequins and rhinestones every day. I know not everyone’s captivated by the Olympic costumes, but the following simply can’t go without special mention.
Not all male figure skaters wear fake tuxedos. Evan Lysacek got his slithering bejeweled snake ensemble from Vera Wang.
Japan’s Miki Ando sported a crystallized cross in Wednesday’s ladies free skate.
Irish brother-and-sister ice dancing team Sinead and John Kerr went cowboy chic with denim cutoffs and rhinestone accents.
There are also tasteful tributes to the Bedazzler.
No surface is sacred. Florent Amodio of France goes for marionette-inspired gold in merlot silk and sparkling suspenders.
They may not be sparkly, but get a load of Maxim Shabalin and Oksana Domnina of Russia. Their controversial costumes are meant to evoke aboriginal peoples.
