I’ve never purchased Broadway tickets without hearing rave reviews from friends, but a month ago I heard Sean Hayes and Kristin Chenoweth would soon be asking “What do you get when you fall in love?” I knew right away that the answer would be a night out to see Promises, Promises.

My friends and I started our Broadway night out the right way: with finger food.  You can’t go wrong with anything at Empanada Mama, where the menu boasts fillings from Colombian-style beef to tuna and jalapeño. Situated in Hell’s Kitchen, the empanada emporium is only a few blocks’ walk (or dance!) to the Broadway Theatre, where the revival of Promises is playing.

Without spoiling too much of the show, the musical highlights include “I Say a Little Prayer For You” (not one of the original numbers, but you’ll sing along nonetheless), “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again,” and of course, the Christmas party/signature dance number, “Turkey Lurkey.”

While Sean works his comedic magic in several scenes, the biggest laughs come from Katie Finneran. Though she doesn’t appear until the second act, she makes up for lost time with her hilarious, pitch-perfect character Marge. Marge has had a little bit too much to drink, shows a little bit too much leg, and wears a little bit too much…OWL!

Sean and Katie promise some good entertainment.

Katie's owl coat promises- and delivers- big laughs

I’m not the only one who thinks Katie’s a “hoot” (I’m proud of that pun), as she’s up for a Tony in Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical.  Also in the “Promises Parade” of Tony nominations are Sean (Best Performance by a Leading Actor), Rob Ashford (Best Choreography), and Jonathan Tunick (Best Orchestrations).
