A Mazel Meal

Self-professed food snob and organic junkie Steven here to share my latest dining adventure….

I decided to take advantage of Restaurant Week (on the last night, of course) and try out a new spot downtown.  When a friend and I stumbled upon Kutsher’s Tribeca, and I saw the menu and I “Yes, I want this.”  Little did I know it was one of the “new” must-check-out spots, having recently been reviewed by The New York Times.

I arrived early with my friend and were going to grab drinks at the bar, but they were able to seat us  at a gorgeous corner spot, which offered a full view of the restaurant.  The wine list was a winner, too, with my favorite, a fantastic Malbec at only $10/glass.  While it isn’t a bargain price, it was a great glass of wine in an amazing atmosphere.

Our first course was gefilte fish. Before the meal arrived our waitress brought me  a jug of horseradish, which I poured all over the mild fish and molded beet slaw. Beyond amazing. My friend had the meatballs, which were also quite yummy.  The fish was great – the beets they serve along with the fish were outstanding.

I was so content with my Malbec and fish I couldn’t believe I had SKIRT STEAK coming!  When it arrived I glanced around – as all of the tables around us seemed to be fixated on both our appetizers and our meal.   The steak was outstanding – a fresh pile of tender meat topped with mushrooms and onions and drizzled with a tasty sauce, served  with mashed potatoes. As i often say, MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.

Another glass of Malbec, and I was ready for dessert!  A black and white cookie that seemed so fresh one could taste all the different flavors as if it had just been made by a Bubbe… or a pastry chef, if there’s one in your family!  It was of course TWO  cookies that had about two inches of ice cream in between them… hard to describe the explosion of taste after one bite.  I, of course, devoured half of my friend’s cookie platter as well – cinnamon rugelach and layered cookies of raspberry jam, chocolate, and cake.

On the walk (wobble) out of the restaurant and back to SoHo my friend and I gushed about  the outstanding food.  By the time we had finished our meal the restaurant was PACKED.  Like Balthazar kind of packed.  So much organized commotion it was wonderful to see.  To a place with food that is this yummy I say MAZEL TOV!
