I recently encountered, what appeared to be, a homeless man on the block of the Museum of Modern Art, here in NY. His sign said simply Dwellingly Challenged.
I googled the term and found one witty blogger who used it as a generalization for homeless people. But the sign of this gentleman on 53rd street stuck with me for days. I wish I’d taken the time to stop and talk with him and find out what his story was – because the sign really invited some sort of engagement.
The encounter suddenly put our whole precious ‘design world’ into a new context – and yet perhaps in his own way he was making a provocative design statement of his own. As the “greats” like Milton Glaser champion Design as a Force of Change, I wonder what this man’s intentions were, if not just to cause folks to pause and contribute to his needs.
