It Takes A Village

As a mom, my entire world view is seen through the lens of what the world will be for the next generations, from the way we impact the environment to our educational systems.

This week I was tickled by two very inspiring thoughts on a topic that I feel compelled to share. And I hope these inspire you to help change the world as well -even if it is with baby steps.

The first was learning the air-date November 14th, for ABC-TV’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’s makeover of the Lighthouse Preschool in Nashville TN. You might remember this school – as it was seen in May on national TV,  floating down a highway during devastating flooding. Our client, the HON Company, donated all of the furnishings for the classrooms – part of their SmartLink collection. This collection while inspiring, makes me feel REALLY old, because these systems and desks are the coolest desks I’ve ever seen, light years beyond what I’ve ever used or even taught with.  They have technology at the forefront of the designs, and include thoughtful elements like a backpack hook! I digress – the point is that tputting these systems and tools into the community, particularly into the hands of children, will build a better future for the world.

The second was receiving this thank you picture from a dear friend at Sharing To Learn, a global shared learning organization based in Makuleke, South Africa. Here is Tshuxeko and his new shoes. The first shoes, in fact, that he’s ever had to run in – shoes that 6 months ago belonged to my son Luca here in NYC.

Tshuxeko’s favorite animal is a goat. His favorite food is pap (maize meal). When he grows up he wants to be a soldier man. He is five years old. He doesn’t go to school yet because his family doesn’t have the money to get him shoes and clothing to attend the local preschool. He will go directly to Kindergarten.

Tshuxeko’s favorite color is red.

Luca’s favorite animal is a dog. His favorite food is pasta. When he grows up he wants to be a nice kids’ doctor. He is three years old. He goes to preschool five days a week – puts up a fight going, but he knows that he is learning great things there that will help him grow. He knows that he is lucky. And his favorite color is blue.

Luca likes ice cream, too.

The composer Jose Conde was inspired by these children and by the global mission of STL. He wrote a song in collaboration with people of the village of Makuleke. By going to this link and paying $1 to download the song, you will contribute to the building of a technology center and library for the village and surrounding area’s families.

Let’s celebrate the baby steps and the big leaps toward a brighter future!
