Design Trend of the Month: Meander (Greek Key Pattern)

The meander is a classic motif that continues to grace stylish decor, furniture, and housewares. Despite being a timeless design, the meander is July’s Design Trend of the Month because, especially in crisp blue and white, it is reminiscent of the Greek Islands – a picturesque summertime getaway. Below, the VP+C team shares its favorite meander must-haves, but first, let’s take a trip to learn about this iconic pattern:

– It symbolizes unity and infinity.
– It was a common decorative element in the pottery, art, temples, vases and architectural friezes of ancient Greece and in the art of ancient Rome.
– It appears on the quintessential New York City paper coffee cup, the Anthora.
– The name “meander” recalls the twisting and turning path of the Maeander River in Southwestern Turkey. This river is mentioned in “the Iliad” by Homer.

Keys in interesting places…

An antique fixture with Greek-key ornamentation inspired interior designer Madeleine Stuart to create this unique chandelier. I like it because the fluid, rounded lines are a striking contrast to the sharp angles of the Greek keys.

Michelle likes pretty printed plates…

Pretty in print is the meander motif found in this stackable tray set from the Happy Chic by Jonathan Adler collection at jcpenney. Chic on its own and when layered between chevron and retro floral pattern play, this tray is a classic example of why Adler is revered for mixing timeless style with current trends. Spot this print throughout other pieces in his exclusive collection for jcpenney.

Margaux captures the Greek key spirit…

For those who are fortunate enough to live in a Kelly Wearstler world – God Bless. The princess always splashes a healthy, elegant dose of Greek key into her spaces (like her home office and a bathroom of her design, here). For those of us who wish to capture the spirit on our own, check out Calico‘s geometric odes to Greek key, gates and lattice, like these fabrics available for your own upholstery, curtains, tables, cushions and more.

Lisa satisfies her craving…

It’s been a long time since my honeymoon in Santorini, but I’m still wishing I had splurged on the stunning meander-patterned jewelry that’s all over the shops there. These items are surprisingly hard to find stateside, but I think this piece might satisfy my Greek key cravings…
